Larnaca is the town most of us pass through on the way somewhere else, which is exactly why it's underrated — we've had years to actually stop and look at what's here instead of driving straight past it. A palm-lined promenade sits over ancient Kition, one of the most photographed mosques in the Mediterranean sits beside a flamingo-filled salt lake, and the old quarter hasn't been fully resort-ified. Three days is enough to cover it properly, either on its own or as bookends to a longer Cyprus trip.
We schedule any Larnaca errand around a walk on the Finikoudes promenade at sunset — it's the one thing that never gets old no matter how many times we've done it.
Getting there
Larnaca International Airport (LCA) is the closest a European or Israeli capital gets to landing in a city center — about 10 minutes to the seafront by taxi or bus. Direct flights from Tel Aviv are under an hour, one of the shortest scheduled international routes out of Israel.
Where to stay
The Finikoudes promenade puts you steps from the beach, the marina, and most restaurants. The old town streets just behind it are quieter and a few euros cheaper, with the medieval fort and Agios Lazaros church within an easy walk either way.
The 3-day route
- Day 1: The Finikoudes promenade and marina, the Church of Agios Lazaros, and the medieval fort at the water's edge.
- Day 2: Hala Sultan Tekke mosque on the edge of the Salt Lake — best at sunrise or sunset, and when the lake holds water in winter, often shared with wintering flamingos.
- Day 3: The Kition archaeological site in the old town, then a slow last day at Mackenzie Beach or a short trip out to the Ayia Napa sea caves if time allows.
Practical notes
- The Salt Lake only holds visible water (and flamingos) in the wetter months, roughly November through March — it's usually dry by summer.
- As the main international gateway, Larnaca works well as a first or last stop on a longer Cyprus itinerary, not only as a standalone trip.
- Car rental desks are all at the airport, making it an easy pickup point if the rest of the trip continues by road.
