We treat the coast north of town as our own back yard, which means we've had time to figure out which beaches are worth a special trip and which are only good on a quiet Tuesday. Paphos's coastline runs from wide sandy beaches near the harbor to increasingly wild coves the further north you go, ending in the Akamas Peninsula where the road gives out and boats or 4x4s take over. This route follows the water, not the ruins.
Coral Bay gets crowded with day-trip buses by late morning in summer — if you want it closer to how it felt years ago, go before 9am or after 5pm, when the light's better anyway.
Getting there
Paphos International Airport (PFO) is about 15 minutes from Kato Paphos, itself the starting point for the whole coast road north. Direct flights from Tel Aviv run just over an hour.
Where to stay
Coral Bay and the coast just north of it put you closest to the best beaches without a daily drive; Kato Paphos works too if a boat trip or two will cover the more remote coves instead.
The beaches, north to south
- Coral Bay: the easiest sandy beach near town, sheltered and family-friendly, with sunbeds, watersports, and beach bars right on the sand.
- Lara Bay: further up the Akamas coast, undeveloped and reachable mainly by 4x4 or a rougher stretch of road — a nesting site for loggerhead and green turtles in season, with none of Coral Bay's infrastructure.
- The Blue Lagoon: at the tip of the Akamas Peninsula, accessible only by boat trip or 4x4 track — turquoise, shallow, and one of the best snorkeling spots on this coast.
- Sea caves near Peyia: a shorter stretch of coastline south of the Akamas, good for an afternoon of cliff-jumping and snorkeling around the caves without committing to a full boat day.
- Alykes and Faros beaches: closer to Kato Paphos itself, calmer and more convenient for a half-day swim without a long drive.
Practical notes
- Lara Bay and the Blue Lagoon are genuinely remote — bring water, shade, and fuel, since there's little to no infrastructure at either.
- Boat trips to the Blue Lagoon run daily from Latchi harbor in season and are the easier option if a 4x4 rental isn't appealing.
- Turtle nesting season at Lara Bay runs roughly June through August; nests are marked and protected, so keep clear of any roped-off sections.
